What is Biotechnology?

You know that one kid that sat next to you during your biology class and used to screw up the curve on every test? Yeah, that kid had it right. Biotechnology is a hot commodity in the economy today, helping to create solutions to modern day problems, while also helping to explore the reach that science can have in our lives. Biology isn’t just about cutting open frogs and flinging the intestine at your lab partner. What you learned in biology class can help to change the world, and in more ways than you might realize.

Different Types of Biotechnology

When you want to use your science degree, realize that you’re not going to be cooped up in a laboratory unless you really want to be. There are a few different types of biotechnology that you can explore:

  • Green Biotechnology – This biotechnology deals with the application of biology in the plant world and how these new innovations can help to shift plant growth and resistance to disease, for example.
  • White (Grey) Biotechnology - You can also use biotechnology to work with industrial concerns, helping to clean up waste in a more effective manner.
  • Blue Biotechnology – Watching the way that water is affected by outside issues and then correcting these issues is the goal of blue biotechnology.
  • Red Biotechnology - In red biotechnology, changes to drugs and to other medical practices is studied and then applied.
  • Multicolored Biotechnology – When the biotechnology can be used in more than one area, it is considered to be multi-colored.
  • Bioinformatics, Genomics, and Structural Biology – Using the knowledge of genetics can help to advance biotechnology and its applications.
  • Protein folding and molecular interactions – Looking at the structure of DNA and other related protections can help to show how the world operates at the cellular level, in order to change it.
  • Genomics – Advancements in genetic biotechnology help to create cures and to begin to explain occurrences in the human and plant worlds.

No matter the biotechnology application, the world can be changed the more we know about it.

How Biotechnology Can Change Your World

Think about it – if all of the problems of the world could be fixed by understanding nature better, the world would be a better place. Instead of trying to create a bunch of unnatural solutions, scientists can work to stimulate natural processes that can help to clean up oil spills, cure diseases, etc. The more that we learn and apply to biotechnology, the more that the world can benefit in the long run. Maybe you should have listened in biology class and not cheated off the person next to you.

With biotechnology, the world is beginning to better understand itself. And that’s a good thing. Lately, it seems that the world is trying too hard to work against itself because a few lab tests prove certain things are possible. But by working with nature and with the way it already works, even more hope is possible.
